1972 Guild F-40

1972 Guild F-40

This vintage Guild guitar is so lovely that I’m almost tempted to keep it. The earliest Guild F-40s were wonderful and unique, quite different form the later ones. For starters, this one was made in Westerly, Rhode Island, under the aegis of the original Guild company owners, before Guild was sold and sold again. These original F-40s, which are quite rare, have a very important feature that the later ones do not: a mahogany neck vs a maple one. Solid maple necks on guitars with lightweight bodies like these tend to unbalance the sound, let alone the feel. Adding a nice, genuine mahogany neck gives perfect balance and this one, with its maple center laminate stripe and Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, is terrific. Great shape, great feel, and of course a full setup here in our own shop for the comfiest playability. The tuning machines are genuine German-made Schallers, way nicer than later Asian copies. The body of the guitar, with its solid maple sides and arched maple back, has the “jumbo” contour but not the giant size; it’s scaled down just enough to feel just right when you hold it. The tones of a maple-bodied guitar are unique, with clarity all across the range and a brightness that can’t happen with other woods. Its finish has just enough light playing wear to let you know that it’s been around, knows plenty of songs and can’t wait for more. Heckuva great guitar to sit with, to write with, to take on gigs. You’ll be so happy to have it in your home. Only $1895 w/hsc
