1975 Martin D-35 Sunburst

1975 Martin D-35 Sunburst

This one will not let you go, it's that great. In the early 1970s Martin was not offering sunburst finishes, had no custom shop, and was not accepting special orders, nohow, from no one. Period. By prevailing on a lot of people I knew there and because of my close relationship with the company since the early 1960s I was able to convince them to make some special 000-45s, a couple of sunburst D-41s that ended up on Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder tour, and a few other special guitars that they claimed were “just not possible”. But I was a pest, and they finally relented. I honestly don't know if this sunburst D-35 came about as a result of my needling them or if someone else jumped on the bandwagon a bit later on but regardless, it is one rare Martin from that period and it is also one heck of a great Martin guitar. D-35, all the regular stuff that goes with the model and this one's got that certain je ne sais quoi but I don't know what it is, other than you’ll love it as much as I do. It came to me from the estate of its original owner, who I'm told got it as a special gift when it was new and loved it dearly. It’s got its share of nicks and dings, got some fret wear in the first position, and it speaks right out to you saying "I’ve been played a LOT and please please play me more”. Action height a bit easier than standard for a Martin Dreadnaught, plays noticeably more smoothly than they usually do, is nicely set up with an .012-.053 set, just right. There are no cracks anywhere, no repairs of any kind ever needed nor done. The pickguard is a very neat and lovely tortoise-type replacement, happened all the time on 70s Martins when the original black ones shrank and this is one of the better jobs I’ve seen. And thankfully still has its original genuine ivory nut and saddle, one of the very last Martins to get that. Original tuning machines still there too, an unusual set of American-made Grover “Bullseye” Rotomatics, hardy even seen these on any Martin. Strap button added at the heel, save you the trouble. But the real deal comes when you play it, this now nearly 50-year-old Martin, speaks right up and says “Keep me close”. You'll be the second person to be able to say that to this truly wonderful sunburst D-35. Comes with a somewhat worn but serviceable hard shell case. $3995 w/hsc
