Behold, the much sought after but rarely encountered Martin D-35 in its original form, with Brazilian rosewood back and sides; we don’t see many coming available these days, or at least very few as fine as this one. Martin introduced the D-35 in response to a rapidly dwindling supply of Brazilian rosewood in the mid-1960s. A big part of the problem was getting Brazilian that was wide enough to make D-28 backs, and so they came up with a design for a model with a three-piece back, upgraded it with fingerboard binding and a few other nice details, and the D-35, at a higher price point than the D-28, was created. By late 1969 Brazilian was gone for good from the regular Martin lineup, replaced by East Indian to this day. This situation came about from Brazil starting to insist on cutting logs into boards themselves for more profit; Martin needed to have their woods milled in very particular ways, which they'd been having done locally since the 1800s. The Brazilians could not meet Martin's standards and so by late 1969 Martin totally switched to East Indian rosewood for their upper models and Brazilian was over.

There are some design features other than the three-piece back and nice fingerboard binding that differentiate the D-35 from the D-28. 1) The four main top braces are a bit narrower and lighter than on D-28s. This gives the top a little more flex and while one cannot easily categorize the sound of a D-35 vs. that of  a D-28, it's just, well, unique. 2) What is called the “volute”, that interesting sorta diamond-shaped rise on the back of the neck just behind the nut area on a D-28, has been eliminated. Since Martin necks got their final shaping using all hand tools until the early1980s (can you believe that?), this cuts down greatly on time required for shaping necks. 3) The necks are a bit shallower front-to-back than D-28 necks had traditionally been.

Now for the brass tacks department: This 1969 Brazilian rosewood Martin D-35, one of the very last of them, is hotter ’n a two-dollar pistol. 100% gone over by us right here in our own shop to have a perfect action with a standard .012-053 string set; it feels so nice and crisp to play. Sounds big and clear, exactly the way it oughta. And it's 100% solid too, no cracks, no repairs ever needed, no nonsense. Sherlock Holmes here spent one heck of a long time convincing himself that there's an extra coat of lacquer on the body, dang near fooled me, guar-on-tee that it'll fool everyone else. Only the teeniest bit of fret use showing and it's still got its original American-made (they don’t do that no more) Grover Rotomatic tuning machines. Original very sturdy hard shell case, a little scuffed in places but hey. Your dream come true for only $5995 w/ohsc
